Description
The Baba & Nyonya Heritage Museum is located in Melaka which are recognized as a World UNESCO Site. The Baba & Nyonya House Museum, also known as the Baba Nyonya Heritage Museum. It showcases the local history of ethnic Chinese-Malays called Baba-Nyonya or Peranakan in Malacca. The family’s origins from Tong’An Province in Southern China and arrive Malacca at early 19th Century with links to one of the last few Kapitans of Malacca. Today the family’s descendants are the seventh generation.
It was opened as a museum in March 1985. The name of the museum is derived from the term Baba, an honorific manner of addressing a Straits-born gentleman and Nyonya which addresses a Straits-born lady.

Baba Chan Cheng Siew (1865-1919) whose eclectic taste offers a glimpse into the richness of the culture. He involved many other social activities, served as a Justice of the Peace, managing trustee of several Chinese Temples and clan associations, a member of the Chinese Advisory Board and was a founding director of one of Malaysia’s prominent ice-manufacturing companies, Atlas Ice. He was also a keen investor in properties, purchasing land in Malacca, Cameron Highlands & Singapore.



GETTING HERE

Take a taxi, ride a trishaw, or walk by foot. The Baba & Nyonya Museum is located in the old district of UNESCO Heritage area of Malacca town, on Jalan Tun Tan Cheng Lock, which is a street directly parallel to the famous Jonker Walk.
